3 common traffic violations and crimes

Driving is a normal thing you do every day that is typically eventless. Most of the time, you simply go to work, run errands or give someone a ride and you are done. Unfortunately, sometimes complications arise and you see red and blue lights in your rearview mirror.

You may unknowingly or intentionally commit a variety of infractions, violations and crimes while you are behind the wheel. Here are some of the most common traffic violations of which you should steer clear.

1. Distracted driving

There are distractions everywhere. Some of the most prevalent distractions include the following:

  • Using your phone to text or call
  • Eating or drinking
  • Putting on makeup or shaving
  • Reading a book
  • Interacting with passengers in the car

Giving in to distractions while driving is common. If law enforcement catches you doing any of these things, they may pull you over.

2. Speeding

According to Digital Journal, speeding is the most common driving violation. In fact, speeding accounts for 60 percent of all traffic violations. You may sometimes be in a hurry to get somewhere or simply be trying to keep up with traffic and find yourself going over the speed limit. Even if your infraction is not intentional, the police may give you a hefty ticket.

3. Driving under the influence

One of the most serious crimes you can commit while driving is doing so under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Never assume you are safe to drive after consuming any mind-altering substance. It is especially important for you to remember that it is illegal to drive while high on marijuana. Despite recreational marijuana being legal in Colorado, you still cannot drive while high.

It is crucial for you to always do your best to be a responsible and safe driver. If you commit any of these violations, you may face fines, license suspensions, DMV hearings or criminal charges.
